February 15th is once again the deadline for this year's applications for both the PLAR bursaries (two at $750 each) and the PLAR scholarship (one at $1000). Bursary applicants may already be engaged in the PLAR process or may be planning to work on their PLAR portfolio in the near future. If so, you must have already contacted CLA to determine your eligibility. Conditions apply.
Scholarship applicants will have successfully completed a PLAR portfolio, applied their credit award toward their program, and are within 30 credits of program completion. Scholarship applications require a short essay which asks for reflection on the applicant's PLAR-related learning. The essay is an important part of the scholarship application process and applicants are advised to take care with it. Good luck to all applicants!
Visit the awards page to learn about these awards.

The Mahara software that CLA uses as its e-Portfolio platform has recently been upgraded to provide some clearer navigation and functionality. Some of the language has also changed to reflect these upgrades; for example, a 'view' is now more clearly called a 'page.') Access the revised instructions here to ensure you have the most recent instructions to create your e-Portfolio for PLAR assessment.

Click here to look at our new program-based virtual portfolio, placed here as an example of what a completed portfolio looks like. This is an adaptation of actual student work, used with permission and with all names and details changed. Note also that this example represents a hard-copy portfolio, and although the e-Portfolio platform is now also available for your use, this example still demonstrates the same pieces and parts of the portfolio format. This is what your completed work would like like if you put it in a binder for hard-copy submission. If you choose to upload your work into our e-Portfolio format, it will end up looking like this.
Our students love the new e-Portfolio format but you can choose whichever method you prefer.

CLA is delighted to announce that Kathryn Sturtevant from Bridgetown, Nova Scotia was awarded the PLAR scholarship award for 2012. Congratulations, Kathryn!
As a part of the PLAR scholarship application, we ask for a short essay that outlines how the PLAR process has contributed to the student's success as an AU learner. In responding to this question, Kathryn had written:
"I was at once intrigued and encouraged by the prospect that all my training and experience could be valued by the world of academia. To think that it could be recognized in a formal sense was exciting! ...Compiling my portfolio was rewarding and eye-opening. In writing and gathering the material, I gained insight into my strengths. I hadn't realized that I possessed such a wealth of skills, experience, and valuable attributes. After my portfolio was evaluated...the comments from the assessors were invaluable, providing positive feedback on my efforts as well as helpful suggestions for further study....In offering PLAR, Athabasca University recognizes that not all learning takes place in a classroom. I am grateful for this chance to enrich my life, not only through the credits I received, but through the process itself. PLAR has helped me to achieve my learning goals in a shorter time than I could ever have thought possible. I have saved time and money, and received credits toward my degree; more importantly, I have gained other intangible benefits: pride, satisfaction, validation, recognition, respect."
In her communication with us, Kathryn wrote, "I hope others will take advantage of the wonderful opportunity that PLAR affords." We hope so too. Please visit the awards page to further investigate the award and note the next application deadline of February 15, 2013.

Every so often, happy PLAR completers recognize their mentors' efforts with gracious floral gifts, and it delights all of us when such lovely bouquets arrive. Here is a picture of one such bouquet that turned up recently for Gail. Thanks so much to the sender of this colourful arrangement!
